4 Costly Misconceptions about House Cleaning

Misconception #1:  You should wait as long as possible between cleanings.

No.  Dirt is an abrasive - like sandpaper.  Every time you step on the carpet, you grind dirt into your carpet fibers.  This cuts your carpet, just as if you had used a knife, causing it to wear out faster.  A dirty carpet will not last nearly as long as a clean carpet.  And proper vacuuming and proper frequency of vacuuming are critically important to the cleanliness and health of your home.  For budget minded individuals as well, the less frequent your home cleaning service is allowed to come to the home, the more you will pay for bi-weekly and monthly cleaning fees.

Misconception #2: The only reason to clean carpets is to get out the dirt.

No.  As you probably know, outdoor air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust -- and hundreds of other chemicals.  When you and your family members come into your home, you carry those pollens, bacteria and chemicals in your hair and on your skin, clothing and shoes.  Not surprisingly, all those chemicals, pollens and bacteria wind up -- you guessed it -- in your carpet.  If you have allergies, asthma, emphysema, or other breathing problems -- one major source of your problem could be the pollens, fungus, and chemicals in your carpet.  In addition, as you may know, tobacco smoke contains over 4000 different chemical compounds, 43 of which cause cancer.  And even if you don't smoke, those chemicals get on your shoes, you track them in to your home and you leave them in your carpet.  If you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, you might find that you'll breathe easier after you hire a company to get those harmful chemicals out of your carpet.  Routine home cleaning, including proper vacuuming will help immensely as well.  So in addition to getting rid of dirt, another important reason to clean your carpet is to get rid of pollens, fungus, bacteria, chemicals and the tars and residue from tobacco smoke.

Misconception #3:  Housekeeping is housekeeping.  All house cleaning companies are the same…but there are just some that are cheaper.

Many homeowners see house cleaning companies as “all the same.”  This is simply not true.

House cleaning is a true professional service run and managed by technically trained, highly qualified personnel.  And therefore, the old adage rings true, “You tend to get what you pay for….”

One area of distinction that can be critically important to your home’s cleanliness and health is proper disinfecting and sanitizing methods.  Many independent cleaners are not even trained in proper chemical handling or sanitizing methods.

Misconception #4:  Any honest house cleaning company should be able to give you an exact price quote over the telephone.

I wish this were true, but it isn't.  Consumers often think that if they simply call a company and describe their home, they should be able to get a firm quote over the phone immediately.    But this isn't always true.

Some examples of issues that make the “telephone instant quote” difficult are:

  • The Dirt Code—the level of dirt of your home as seen through your eyes, versus the level of dirt that we see when we physically inspect your home
  • Specific services included and not included
  • Opportunity to provide additional services at a discount, saving you the hassle of dealing with multiple service providers
